Island Bookies December and January Reads....

At our December meeting we discussed Wally Lamb's "charming" little Christmas story, Wishin' and Hopin' 

Everyone seemed to find something to which they could relate from late elementary or middle school, and those who had attended Catholic School were just reliving their pasts.We even found time to relax and just talk a bit.

 Our book for January is The Supremes at Earls;  All You Can Eat, by Edward Kelsey Moore

Between The Covers - November's Book Selection

Marian presented "Me Before You" in such a beautiful manner.  Marian described this book as a classic love story, differences between classes, family dynamics, and assisted suicide.  The movie comes out in August 2015.  

Marian asked the group - what does "Me Before You" mean to you?  Carole mentioned the meaning was "who I was before I met you".  Ginger felt the title was about the selfishness of the world - Me Before You.  Donna suggested perhaps the title meant - it is my decision.  In the end, the decision is personal and everyone deals with it differently.  

The discussion moved towards the selfishness of the families towards both Louisa and Will.  His mother could not speak to him since he was always his own person.  

Marian did a fabulous job of leading our discussion.

Between The Covers - October Book Selection - Five Days At Memorial

"Five Days at Memorial" by Sherri Fink, M.D., Ph.D. was presented by Allyson.  The book was about when people make life and death decision in a state of anarchy.  We discussed the differences in outcomes between Memorial and Charity; The role media played in the whole tragedy, Tenet's role, on-site management's unconscionable aloofness, the difference an alternate route to the helipad would have made in outcomes (death Memorial 45: 3 at Charity), government and FEMA and  depriving patients of routine care at Memorial.  We discussed the lessons learned and repeated during Sandy.  The differences between NO and Miami/Dade county preparedness for hurricanes.  We had great discussions.

We rated the book 3.53.  So interesting - most people loved or disliked the book.

September Book - The Glass Castle

"Glass Castle" by Jeanette Walls is presented by Meredith.    From the opening sentence "I was sitting in a taxi wondering if I had dressed appropriately for the evening when I looked up and saw Mom rummaging through dumpster."  The book captured you from the beginning.  Meredith asked how everyone felt from the beginning.  Some felt they would pass judgment and others jump in and help their Mother.  Book was divided into 4 sections - each could have been a vignette itself even though themes that were threaded throughout.   Themes - unconventional parenting  - resilience, child abuse, hunger, perseverance, magic, family, love, mental illness.   We discussed the burn in the hospital and how it was etched in her memory.  She was 3 years old — we discussed all memories from 3 were traumatic.  We discussed the mother as the eternal optimist on steroids.  Meredith posed the question — does anyone think the children would be better with social services?  Majority said no.  We discussed if they had moved to a Haight Ashbury - the consensus was the children would have thrived.  Meredith thought the rocks mentioned throughout the book were so poignant. Our group rated  the book a 4.4. Our October book is Five Days at Memorial by Sheri Fink
